In order to learn effectively, active and experiential problem solving must take place (Confucius). Everyone learns through a combination of the learning modalities- visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic. As teachers, we must be aware of how we personally learn best. Once we understand our own learning, we can use our strengths to improve our teaching. However, we have to be aware that not all our students will learn the same way that we do, so we must vary our instructional activities in order for our course objectives to be reached by all our students (Cognitivism, Bruner and Vygotsky). As a music teacher, I believe in the constructive approach of instruction, where the instructor's role is to mentor peer interactions and continually build on previously known concepts (Dewey and Knowles). In this type of learning, the instructor isn't the only sole dispenser of knowledge, and students can feel active in creating their own learning. The best learning occurs when their is a systematic approach that builds upon known concepts and allows for active, self-discovery in a positive environment.
